News For 2011!

  • This weekend's show was held at the Buckhorn Ranch Arena located in West Sunbury, PA. Beth and Whirling Fastcat earned 5th place out of 80+ riders and Mason and I Run For Kisses had a good run in the Open class earning a check in the second division on Saturday, April 9, 201l. Our colt Viper is really showing us a desire to run barrels and we continue to be happy with how he is developing as a barrel prospect.

  • On March 19, 2011, Mason and I Run For Kisses (Sara) earned 2nd place in the Youth Class at Grizzle Ridge Arena located in Jerusalem, Ohio. Sara and Mason also earned 6th place in the Open class out of 96 entries. Beth and Whirling Fastcat earned 6th place overall in the Warm-up 3D clas and also 3rd place in the Masters class and also 3rd place in the second division of the Open Class. It was great getting out and having the sun above you and a horse beneath you! :)

  • Okay. Hopefully, I can do a better job of updating this website then I did in 2010. :) Our children have become teenagers and they are involved in so many things. We are still barrel racing as much as ever. I'm happy to report that Mason has won the first two Penn-Ohio Youth Races held this year. He won the first race with Jolena Rey Smooth and his second race this past weekend, with his mare, I Run For Kisses.

Mason has a 4 year old gelding he will also be hauling this year, Carters Hickory aka Viper. Training a horse to run barrels has its highs and lows. Buying a young horse is kind of like buying a lottery ticket. Some win and some don't! We have high hopes for Viper and will enjoy the journey as always.

Track season has started and we will be hitting the races as much as we can in between track meets! Hope your year has started well!

  • News For 2010!

  • Pull your hat down tight! The last Fast Times Cowboy's Association race on Feb. 21st did not go as I would have wanted! The spectacular spill at the first barrel Cat and I had will hopefully not be repeated. (And a shout-out to Dave, the Equine Therapist who helped make my mare feel so much better! Thank you!) The upside is that I was super happy with the run I had with Jory. I am really enjoying getting with this horse. I thank Mason for having kept her in such great shape and I'm ready to race her this year! <):-)

  • Mason received his Top 5 Awards at the Penn-Ohio banquet on January 30, 2010. It was a great season of barrel racing and all the youth members worked very hard to earn their Top 5 standings. Congratulations to all and good luck in the 2010 season! Hopefully the weather starts cooperating and we won't have any more canceled shows! :-)

  • After a long winter break, Mason and I headed to Simmons Equestrian Center on January 23, 2010. It felt like a heat-wave with the temperatures warming up into the 40's. Whirling Fastcat did me proud by running in the First Division of the Open 4D. I'm starting to learn Jory's style of running and had two nice, clean runs with her. Although, my second run was way wide on my first barrel approach...(bad on my part!) it took me an hour to get there and around it, we were so wide in the turn! Mason and I Run For Kisses had two pretty runs, with that team earning a check, placing 2nd in the Second Division of the Open 4D. It felt WONDERFUL to get out with my children and spend time with my horses and my horse-show friends. :-)

  • News For 2009!

  • For the Ohio NBHA-08 District Year-End awards, Beth earned Top 5 Awards in the Open First Division and Mason earned Top 5 Awards in the Youth Class in the First Division, Second Division, and the Third Division.

  • Beth and Whirling Fastcat recieved awards in the Top 5 2D in the Open Class and finished 4th place for the Masters class for the PA IBRA. Mason received Top 10 2D Open and Top 5 1D and 2D in the youth class. Mason also finished out the Penn Ohio Barrel Racing Association Season with a 4th place finish in the first division in the youth class.

Now that November has arrived so has our winter break. The horses certainly have earned a well-deserved break from the barrel racing. <):-)

  • October 9-11 was a great weekend racing at the WB Arena. Mason and I headed out there along with our cousin, Robin. I won the 2D on Friday night and Robin earned a check in both the youth and the Open 4D on Friday. My horse, Whirling Fastcat made some super consistent runs and I couldn't be happier with her. Mason and his horses had some nice runs too. Jory and him earned an average check in the 2D for the weekend. Now all of us are looking ahead to the All American Quarter Horse Congress. See you all in Columbus!

  • We visited the WB Ranch Arena located in Swanton, Ohio this August. Mason had the fastest time of the weekend and won two races with Jory. Sara placed 3rd in the Saturday youth race. Cat won me a couple of checks. We placed 4th in the first division and also got a 2nd division check. =)

  • *May 18, 2009* Mason and I have been hitting the road and barrel racing each weekend all through the months of April and May. It looks like a great summer for barrel racing. Mason has been putting down some good runs with Jory. Cat won a Master's class for me at Buckhorn a couple of weeks ago. Sara had some time off and is coming back nicely. There have also been some ugly bruises on our knees from hitting some barrels. It is all part of barrel racing! =)

  • *April 4, 2009* The show at the Greene County Fairgrounds was a mix of highs and lows. Mason had an AWESOME run going in the youth class with Sara and the timer quit working. He then went in there again and laid down a nice run, ending up 4th in the youth class with Sara. The first run was much nicer looking and we figure it would have been a faster run. He also made a smoking fast run in the Open 4D and placed 4th out of 115 riders.

  • *March 27-29, 2009* The show at the Diamond 7 Arena in Dillsburg, PA was wet and cold. Lots of rain and mud! Mason managed to pull 3 checks that weekend in the youth classes. While Whirling Fastcat and myself had all good, clean runs, we couldn't get lucky and get a check!

  • Mason placed second in the 2nd division of the Open 4D race with JOLENA REY SMOOTH at the March 21, 2009 show at Porchview Arena . In the Youth class, his young horse, I RUN FOR KISSES placed 3rd in the 1st division.

  • At the 3/14/2009 barrel race held at Buckhorn Ranch, Mason placed in the 2nd division of the Open 4D race with I RUN FOR KISSES and JOLENA REY SMOOTH. Beth and WHIRLING FASTCAT placed 3rd in the 3rd division of the Open 4D.

It was a beautiful spring day. There were over a 100 entries in the Open 4D and lots of new faces entering the race.

  • Whirling Fastcat and Beth won 3rd place in the Open 4D, second division on March 7, 2009 at the IBRA show located in Waynesburg, PA. The show didn't end until after 3:00 A.M. What a long drive home!

  • Mason won third place year-end awards for the Penn-Ohio Barrel Racing Association in the second division of the youth. Photos from the Penn-Ohio banquet can be found here on our Fun Stuff page.

  • Beth and Whirling Fastcat won 3rd place in the first division for 2008 year-end awards for NBHA-Ohio 08. Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth recieved Top 5 awards for the first division of the youth and his horse, Sara recieved Top 5 awards in the second division of the youth.

  • We rang in the New Year by spending the weekend at the New Year's Eve Spectacular barrel race held at Robert's Arena located in Wilmington, Ohio. Whirling Fastcat placed in the first go of the Open Race on Friday and landed in the cracks of the 1st division of the Cowgirl's Barrel Race on Saturday.

Our young horse, Sara performed great at her first big show of her lifetime. She won the second division of the Cowboy's Barrel Race on Saturday and was just one out of the money of the second division of the Open Race on Sunday.

    News For 2008!

  • The barrel races have really slowed down for the month of December. A couple of shows were canceled due to the weather.

On Saturday, December 6, 2008, I took Whirling Fastcat over to the Bulls and Barrels at Sundance Arena. It was the first time for anything like that for this mare.
    Photobucket
"Cat" handled the new sights, sounds and smells quite well. We took 3rd place at this event. You can view other photos and read more about this evening on our Fun Stuff page by clicking here.

Mason has started playing basketball again this winter. So we are now super busy trying to keep the horses rode and exercised while keeping up with the basketball schedule. Our calendar is jam packed at the moment!
    *****

  • Mason and Beth had a great day at Buckhorn Ranch racing on November 8, 2008. All three of our horses pulled checks. Jolena Rey Smooth and Mason won the Youth Race. Whirling Fastcat and Beth won the second division of the Open 4D and Mason and his horse, Sara pulled a check also in the second division of the Open 4D.

Beth and Whirling Fastcat had a great run together, in the NBHA Open 4D race, placing 5th overall out of 90 riders on Saturday.

  • *****

  • Beth and Whirling Fastcat had another great run at Buckhorn Ranch in the Master's Class and won the race.

Then a bit of bad luck with the reins flipping in the Open 4D made for a crazy kind of run for that duo!

  • *****

  • Whirling Fastcat and Beth had terrific runs at Country Corral on Saturday, September 20, 2008. This duo won the Masters Class and placed 2nd in the Open 4D race.

Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth pulled two checks, winning second place in the Youth Class and pulling another check in the Open 4D. Mason and his young horse, Sara also pulled a check in the Youth Class.

  • *****

  • Sunday, September 14, 2008, at the IBRA/POBRA sanctioned race, held at Simmons Equestrian Center we had some of our best runs ever in this arena. The ground was great and the arena record was broken three times by two different riders.

On Sunday, Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth pulled two checks, Mason and his young horse, Sara pulled a check, and Beth with Whirling Fastcat won the Masters Race.

Mariah debuted in the Pee Wee class with her pony, Bullwinkle. She had a blast riding around all weekend.

  • We spent the day (and night-- long story) at Porchview Arena, September 6, 2008. Our horses all ran well and made us some money. Jory and Mason won the Open 3D class. Sara ran well, winning second in the 2D of the Youth Class and fourth place in the 2D of the Open 4D class. Cat and Beth finished out the earnings for the day winning the 3D of the Open 4D class.

Then our day went downhill from there. Our youngest daughter began feeling unwell and needed a trip to the ER. She is okay today.

A big THANK YOU goes out to Andy and Lisa, the owners of Porchview Arena for providing our horses stalls for the night while we took care of our little girl. Thank you!

I'll be posting videos of some of our runs on the FUN STUFF page soon.

  • Mason won the youth race with Jory at the IBRA show held at the Cowboy Corral, July 26, 2008. Then two nice runs in the Open 1D had Mason finishing up in second place with Jory and Beth with Whirling Fastcat in third place over-all.

  • Mason received a TOP 5 AWARD in the YOUTH 1D at the Tri-State Classic, Sunday, July 13, 2008 with his young horse, Sara. Sara is the colt Mason has been working really hard with these past couple of months. We are seeing real progress and potential in this mare.

The Tri-State Classic had some bad luck with the "weather gods" this weekend. Saturday evening saw a severe storm blow through with a TON of rain. So that made for some interesting runs on Sunday. Our other horses really did not like to run in the mud. From now on we will be scratching them from the class if the ground looks this muddy.

Mason and I really enjoyed this show though. It was just the two of us camping. We had fun visiting with friends and doing some relaxing in the great outdoors with our horses. A nice break from our "at home" routine!
  • *****

  • We have been having a great month of barrel racing this month of June. We just spent this past weekend of June 21-22 at the Crooked Creek Horse Park where Mason and Beth had some very successful runs. Mason pulled 3 checks out of 4 runs with Jory. All three of our barrel horses are making a smooth transition from the indoor pens of winter to the the outdoor pens for the summer.

I posted some pictures here from our weekend.
  • *****

  • Saturday, May 31st, found us at Buckhorn Ranch Arena. Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth had a good run, placing 6th place in the Open 1D. We are now looking forward to the outside shows starting up now.

  • This past weekend found us once again at Wild Horse Hollow for the NBHA show. Saturday, Beth finished 8th over-all in the warm-up 4D class. In the NBHA 4D she ended up first place in the 3rd division with a great run from Fastcat.

On Sunday, May 25th, Mason pulled 2 checks in the NBHA Youth class second division winning first and third place with his two horses. Beth pulled a check in the Warm-Up Class with Fastcat and had an awesome run, finishing up in the second division in the NBHA Open 4D class.

It was a beautiful weekend to be camping. A huge difference from the rainy and cold weekend that we had at the last show! Now, we are really looking forward to getting to some shows with some big outdoor arenas.

  • Saturday, April 26, we spent the day barrel racing at Wild Horse Hollow. Beth and Whirling Fastcat had a great run in the Open 4D Class with a money-winning run. You can click here to see this run on our Fun Stuff Page.

  • Today, April 12th was our first show of the 2008 season. The barrel race was held at the Buckhorn Ranch Arena in West Sunbury, Pennsylvania. We finally came out of hibernating in our "den" and got out to a show! We are not a fan of barrel racing in freezing weather and snow!

Congratulations to Mason for winning 2nd place in the 2D of the Youth class at Buckhorn Ranch Arena with his colt Sara. This was only Sara's second show. He also had a good run in the Junior Horse class. Beth and Fastcat placed 7th over all in the Masters class with a really nice run. The weather was a chilly 40 something degrees but it was a great day and a great start for our 2008 race season!

You can see videos of our races here from yesterday's show by clicking on this link!

  • Congratulations to Mason on being a NBHA 2008 World Qualifier. He qualified for the NBHA World Championships by winning the Reserve Champion in the Open 1D for NBHA- Ohio, District 8. Good job to you Mason, that took hard work and dedication! The race is held in Augusta, GA in October.

    News For 2007!

Mason has been playing basketball this winter season. I can say with complete honesty that I am sooooooo glad to have the excuse to not be showing during these cold months! lol We plan on riding this weekend though when the temperature gets above 50 degrees. :-)

  • We are excited to announce that Kay Blandford, the Women's Professional Rodeo Champion 2007, will be racing Jory for us this winter in Texas. You can check out Kay's website here! Look for updates about Jory's winter in Texas here. Mason is playing basketball and we are enjoying taking the winter off from barrel-racing. We are still riding here at the farm though! Come ride with us if you want! Just call!

  • Mason and I attended the Kay Blandford clinic held at Jewel Farms, November 23- 25, 2007 in Centerburg, Ohio. This is a new arena and the facility was really nice. Kay was so down-to-earth and the concepts she was teaching were very easy to understand. I posted a couple of pictures from the clinic on the Fun Stuff page too. If anyone from my area is interested in attending a clinic with Kay please email me. I would love to have her put on a clinic in our area.

  • At the 2007 Quarter Horse Congress, Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth place 8th in the Novice Youth Barrel Racing class.

  • Congratulations to Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth. 2007 NBHA OHIO-08 Open 1D Reserve Champion and 2007 NBHA OHIO-08 Youth 1D Top Five!

  • We just got home from the WBR at Pelzer, South Carolina, Sept. 14-16, 2007. What a great trip. My horse, Whirling Fastcat and I won the Adult 3D Incentive. Fastcat ran so consistent all weekend and just made me so proud of her. She ran 1 second off all weekend against some of the top horses in the country.

The WBR shows are so well organized. Sixty-six horses an hour really gets a barrel racer spoiled!

  • Mr. Bobby Barter was having a bit of fun with me at this show. I will have to post more about that on the Fun Page here. It was another great trip and I am so blessed to have made such great friends from that region of the country. We really love the WBR shows and hope to make it to many more in the future.

  • We were at a NBHA show on Saturday 8/18/2007. It was a good-sized turnout with $1100 added money and 130+ entries and we had all good runs. We went home very happy with the way the day went.

    *****
  • We have so much fun barrel racing. There are few sports where the entire family can get so involved, and nobody sits on a bench. Today, on the way home from Crooked Creek Horse Park, we were all talking about how fortunate our family is to get to spend so much time bonding as a family and having fun together. We sure are making some great memories!

  • We headed up to Crooked Creek just in time for the rain to start pouring. We allowed Mason to run two horses in the youth class and then headed right home. We all got soaked but it was fun. We still had our smiles! LOL

  • *****
  • The World Barrel Racing Show held at the Circle G Arena in Lewisburg, Ohio was an absolute BLAST! Mason won the second division of the Youth 4D Incentive and had awesome and clean runs all weekend. Jory and him are really getting it together. I believe this show will be returning in 2008 to this region and I would recommend this show experience to any barrel racer.

  • At the Ohio IBRA State Finals (7/27-29/2007), while we were warming up our horses to run, there was a serious alley-way accident on Saturday night that injured a couple of people. A lady had to be life-flighted from the show grounds. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and all of their family members. We are praying for the complete healing of all of the injuries.

  • *****
  • Friday at the Tri State Classic (7/13/2007), Mason got 2nd with Fastcat in the youth and pulled a check in the 1D with his horse in the Open 4D. But that was the end of our luck! I had good runs with my horse... I caught a 2nd barrel once when leaving it... I have no idea how it went down.. apparently I thought I was clear and started kicking for the third just a hair to soon. :-( The other runs were good but no money.

  • I DID stay up till 3 on Friday... Talking and laughing with a bunch of people. It has been a LONG time since I have done that at a barrel race. I probably won't be doing that for a while... cause I kind of paid for it all weekend... LOL I haven't laughed so hard in a long time though.. and I am still laughing today at how much fun the whole weekend was.

  • On Sunday, (7/8/2007) at the Van Pelt Arena, Mason and Jolena Rey Smooth won the Open 4D class and Beth and Whirling Fastcat took 2nd place right behind Mason!! Fastcat is really learning where her feet are and figuring out how to run! Mason and Jory also placed 4th in the Youth race.

Whirling Fastcat and Beth won the 2nd division of the Open 2D class, on Saturday, at the Van Pelt Arena (7/7/2007) in Greenville, PA. Mason also placed on Fastcat in the Youth race.

  • This weekend's show was the 2007 Ohio NBHA State Show held at Roberts Arena in Wilmington, Ohio. Mason and Jory had a good run in the Open class On Friday (6/29/2007) and even with a bad slip on the third barrel, they still finished up in 17th place out of 332 riders. Whirling Fastcat STUNNED our entire family in the Youth class on Saturday (6/30/2007) by really coming on strong. Mason and Fastcat ended up in 9th place in the youth out of 130 youth riders. Fastcat and Beth ran high 2D times all weekend in the Open 4D Class. WE WERE SO EXCITED! Whirling Fastcat is really showing us a desire to run barrels and was consistent all weekend.

  • *****
  • The show on Saturday, June 16, 2007 was a HUGE NBHA show located at Circle T in Shelby, Ohio. There were over 200 entries in the big open class. Mason had a great run with Jory and ended up just out of the money in the 1st Division of the Open. In the youth he ran our horse Whirling Fastcat and made money on her. Fastcat is a really fun horse to ride... very quiet, quick and athletic... and comes home with a complete set of brakes... my kind of horse! LMBO

He ended up in the Youth Class in 2nd place on Jory, 3rd place on Two Treys, and also pulled a check with our young horse we are starting, Whirling Fastcat. I also ended up in 3rd place in the third division in the Open NBHA Class with Fastcat. It was gorgeous weather, an easy drive, and a whole lot of fun!

  • The in Speedhorse Bonanza, held in Lexington VA, June 1-3, 2007, was lucky again for both Beth and Mason. Mason and Beth both pulled a check in the NBHA OPEN on Saturday and Mason grabbed another check during the NBHA YOUTH race. As usual, it is always nice to see familiar faces from the other states. It is great to get to visit with friends who live long distances from us but just a few horse trailers down when we are all at a show together!

  • Kent took his mom, Mariah, Marisa, and Mason out to the Circle T Arena yesterday, May 19, 2007. I took myself over 2 hours north in the other direction for a baby shower for my niece. Mason took our colt Cat and his horse Jory. Mr. Two Treys has been getting time off to get him ready for the Speed Horse Bonanza.

Cat was running in top of the 3D with all clean runs and looks like she will be running 2D times very soon. We love how she is "wrapping" the barrels. Mason is doing a terrific job getting her trained on the barrels.

Mason and Jory ended up pulling a check and placing 6th in the 1st division out of a 156 riders in the NBHA Open 4D. This was a huge show with a lot of TOUGH competition!

  • *****
  • Well.. good job to Mason and Jory! They placed second in the 1st. Division of the Open 4D Class at the NBHA show located at Wild Horse Hollow on May 12, 2007. It was a smoking run. :)

Our family wants to commend the officers and directors of the association for doing such a great job this year. I was STUNNED by how great ALL the awards were. Thank you for all the hard work that goes into making this a great regional barrel racing association.

Mason had another great weekend competing on 3 horses. He had some personal bests at this arena and was really happy with all of his runs. Mason ended up 3rd and 5th in the youth class on Saturday and 5th on Saturday in the youth.

Thank you to Todd and Cathy Allen who helped put this horse and rider team together. More thanks also goes to Mom and Dad Penland for all of their love and understanding and all the support we get from our children's teachers. THANK YOU!!
